- Love… is the focus of both our second reading and Gospel today. We’re told that God is love, and that we are to love one another. Jesus reminds us that true love brings joy. Jesus loves us so much, that he also calls us his friends. But love needs to grow, to expand, and to reach out. Jesus chose each of us to go and bear the fruit of love. Let’s take these words to heart!
- Ascension Thursday… is this Thursday, May 10, and it is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will offer two masses that day: our regularly scheduled mass at 9:00 a.m. and a mass at 7:30 p.m. (Note that there is NOT an anticipated mass scheduled on Wednesday evening May 9, since two masses are sufficient here at St. John Capistran for Holy Days of Obligation.)
- Important announcements… were made at the end of all of our masses last weekend about how the diocesan “On Mission for the Church Alive” effort will affect our parish. I’m happy to be able to continue my ministry here at St. John Capistran and as Director of the diocesan Office for Music Ministry, and am looking forward to also ministering at St. Thomas More Parish, as all of us work together to eventually create one parish family. Included in today’s bulletin is a copy of Bishop Zubik’s letter that was read at last weekend’s masses, as well as some other information. In addition, the “Pittsburgh Catholic” newspaper has more details, and was mailed to all registered parishioners this past week. This is an exciting time in the history of the Pittsburgh diocese. Let’s approach the future with optimism and faith!
- Our Blessed Mother, Mary… is a model of love for us. Along with the month of October, popular piety considers May as a month to remember Mary in a special way. Consider praying the rosary, either by yourself, or along with a faithful group who prays the rosary following our weekday masses.
