  • Competition … can be fun and healthy. On the other hand, it can be negative and destructive. That seems to be what our Scriptures are telling us today. In the Gospel, the disciples argue about who is the greatest. The first reading from Wisdom speaks about plans to harm someone who has different priorities; and St. James reminds us of the destructive nature of jealousy and selfish ambition. These are certainly “heavy” thoughts to ponder, but they are worth thinking about. In the end, let’s treat others with compassion and respect, especially those who we find difficult to love.
  • Welcome, Fr. Peter!… Our new Administrator, Fr. Peter Horton, is celebrating the three Masses here at St. John Capistran this weekend. (In exchange, I am celebrating three Masses at St. Thomas More!). Fr. Peter will officially become the new Administrator of the St. John Capistran/St. Thomas More Parish Grouping effective October 15. Let’s give a hearty welcome to Fr. Peter!
  • After-mass socials… are held following all Masses this weekend. Plan to come over to the church hall to say hello to Fr. Peter, and to enjoy good food and fellowship!
  • We’re off to a great start… with our catechetical year! We’re grateful that so many of our parishioners volunteer as catechists, aides, and substitute teachers. We’re always looking for more helpers. If interested, contact our Director of Religious Education, Denise DeCapria.
